Over the summer holidays, we engaged with 15 sports clubs and organisations to deliver Covid-compliant activity for over 1300 children across the city. After the easing of lockdown, providing Holiday Activity to families and young people improved physical and mental wellbeing, social cohesion and safe interaction between children.
Below are just two highlights. We worked with 4CT, a charity based in East Manchester, to support their sessions by providing a sports coach. The sessions worked with 6-14 year old children and feedback from one family was “It’s the first time (child) has socialised with anyone since March.
The sessions have been really good to help him before he goes back to school”. Didsbury Juniors Football Club engaged with children who weren’t already members of their club to deliver evening sessions over 5 weeks of the holidays.
They successfully recruited children to be members of the club at the end of summer.
Over summer, Manchester Young Community Champions, one of MCRactive’s supported clubs, followed exemplary practice and led by example with their COVID-19 measures. On arrival, all children were sat 1m plus apart and were waiting to be registered, temperature checked and hand sanitised.
They were then split off into small groups to do three different activities. Every 15 minutes, the session was stopped for a sanitation of hands. Two young sports leaders from Ardwick and Gorton area were on site delivering to age groups, after gaining their qualification only a week prior.
Neighbourhood Sport Officer, Dan Robinson, complimented the club's efforts saying “As a part of the MCRactive quality assurance, I visited the session and was instantly impressed with the practices put in place.
While I was speaking with the lead coach Mike, the staff had children sat ready and waiting to give details and make sure they’d washed their hands.
You could tell instantly that there had been a lot of thinking and planning on how to make these sessions as safe as possible.”.
Manchester Young Community Champions optimise everything that we want in a club and working in today’s challenging current climate.
